Why this won't work for me

Trailer for Star Trek, The Original Series "prequel"

1966 when the first STTOS aired ... and I was 12 years old and fell immediately in love with it. (confession... I still have my "Mr Spock's Music from Outter Space" album)

And I think I will hate this movie. Why? Because TOS was a product of its era. This movie doesn't look like it can get anywhere near capturing the brash optimism, the almost corny unapologetic heroism of the time. It was an era that said "geez wiz look what we can DO! and let's do it AGAIN!"

STTOS came at a perfect time, when, even as Vietnam was heating up most of us youngsters gobbled up the Space Program as the way of the future and the natural order of things. Geminii and Apollo astronauts smiled at us from classroom bulletin boards and our closet doors; and regardless of the stresses and cracks in society (from the JFK assassination to race riots) we still had a sense that life made sense and the future would always be better.

There was still a certain innocence in America when TOS first aired and that innocence is evident in TOS episodes.

By the time of TNG the whole tone of the show shifted, in no small part because society had shifted.

The remade Battlestar Galactica works (and oh, so, spectacularly) because it was remade from the ground up. No "prequel", just sweep away the memory of the gawdawful original with a totally rebuilt series.

I might be able to buy a totally remade STTOS, but a prequel with 2008 sensibilities trying to front for a 1966-conceived series?

Pfffft.

On the plus side, it looks like a whole bunch of shit blows up.

And, the chicks are hot. Plus, Zachary Quinto's work on Heroes certainly lends credence to the idea that he might be a good Spock.

It's actually frightening to me that Darleen like BSG so much, since half the episodes are about how human your enemies are and how breaking your own laws and rules to beat makes you less human. But, I guess most symbolism is lost on her.

Darleen, and I know you're reading these, can we start calling you Admiral Kane? Given your disdain for homos, we can ignore her lesbianism, but you sort of see yourself as a hardass and she certainly was one. You let us know, okay?

How about if we start calling you Gaius Baltar, timb, because you seem like the kind of guy who would sell out his species. Unless the symbolism is lost on you.

For propriety's sake, I won't ask how you know that. I will, though, suggest you don't tell ML about your marriage plans. He and Darleen will oppose it.

As for me, I believe in equality for you and yours, Chris, and I hope soon enough, you find one big enough to "touch" you.
