School Board supports sexual assault
In Maine, middle school girls (usually ages 11-13) can now obtain hormone-based contraceptives without parental consent or knowledge.
Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.Note: he's not talking about protecting children from sexual assault, only protecting children from parents who don't want their 11 y/o's having sex.The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. [...]
A supporter, Richard Verrier, said it's not enough to depend on parents to protect their children because there may be students who can't discuss things with their parents. [...]
Students treated at the centers must first get written parental permission, but under state law such treatment is confidential, and students decide for themselves whether to tell their parents about the services they receive.Five of the 134 students who visited King's health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland's school health centers.
However, in Maine, anyone having sex with someone under the age of 14 is guilty of "gross sexual assault", punishable by up to 40 years imprisonment.
Nothing in the article indicates Ms. Rowe went to the police when she discovered sexual assault victims.
If this isn't an indication of the support and encouragement of the sexual exploitation of minors, then what is?

That's just unset. Above the par. And totally disgusting. What is up with Maine??? To think how much I love that state...now I'm wondering why.

If the parents in that school district want to put a screaching stop to this, they should ask the district's legal representatitve what sort of legal liability they're undertaking, should these hormones cause problems latter on for those taking them at such a young age.

In fact, if you had read the document that you yourself linked to, you would have found this statement: "Maine and Vermont are the only New England states where the age difference between the offender and the victim must be four years or greater."
I see no evidence that any of the five students were involved with anyone more than four years older. Thus there is no basis for your claim that there was sexual assault, and no reason Rowe should have gone to the police. But don't let those inconvenient facts get in the way of your emotions.

Josh, unlike you, some parents actually want the freedom to tell their 11-year old children to not have sex. And those parents don't necessarily want to tell YOU what to do, but apparently you, and the government in Maine, are DEMANDING that all parents permit, and even encourage, their 11-year old girls to have sex. What scum.

Hey Josh,
Your brand of IGNORANCE is laughable. So this little "law" is ONLY GOING TO APPLY to the four or five CHILDREN that YOU, JOSH, know about and approve of? No chance a TWELVE year old would EEEEEEEEEEEEEEver be pressured to "get The Pill" by a horny SIXTEEN year old?
You can't even be intellectually honest, Josh. A$$holes likes you MAKE ME SICK. YOU are what is WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY.
I hope you grow up (!) someday to have a SLUTTY LITTLE TRAMPY WHORE for a daughter.

Josh
You should have scrolled down a bit further on the link. The "under four year age = 1 year jail" applies only to those 14 and above.
CA has a similiar scheme ... ours are a bit more complicated with several tiers of ages and age differences.
But if one of the parties is under a certain age, then it makes little/no difference. The older party can be exposed to maximum charging.
A 16 y/o that gets a 12 y/o pregnant is looking at being tried in adult court on felony charges that will not only send him to prison but require a lifetime of registration as a sex offender.
CHILDREN who are victims of sexual exploitation don't need encouragement, they need serious help.

Darleen,
You're right. My error in not reading the whole thing.
Janesmom,
I was making a specific legal argument. Your comment, unlike Darleen's, is non-responsive to that argument. Good job on the random all-caps though!
