Amnesty bill is killed

The bill's Senate supporters fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and clear the way for final passage of the legislation, which critics assailed as offering amnesty to illegal immigrants. The vote was 46 to 53 in favor of limiting the debate.

On a related note, here's an eyeopener getting very little MSM play:

Total Annual Cost of Illegals on Taxpayers Exceeds $1 Billion

A new report show illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $35 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in May, announced Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. ...

“Illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers,” said Antonovich. “In addition to $220 million for public safety and $360 million for healthcare, the $440 million in welfare allocations bring the total cost to County taxpayers that exceeds $1 billion a year -- this does not include the skyrocketing cost of education.”

I just wanted to get that out of the way before the trolls show up. ;-)

Troll here. Darleen, do you dislike these people because they are possibly Muslim? I am aware of your disdain (from PW comments) for Islam and its adherents, but I didn't know if you knew that all brown people aren't Muslims.

As for the 35 million dollars you cited, I am uninterested. It's chump change for the benefits across the board our society sees from paying people too little to do a job.

In the end, as I stated on PW, I could care less about this bill, but enjoy its effect of cleaving the Republican from its foot soldiers.

Have a good day.

Welcome tb

I don't mind trolls because they help showcase the moral bankruptcy of the Left (and that's not even mentioning the inability of Left cult members to actually debate)

My disdain is for not for Muslims but for the radical moslems that adhere to Islamism. Try and think of it as akin to my having disdain for the old USSR but not hating Russians.

Chump change? Over $1 million a day not including education?

My my, tb, what trust fund are you paying your illegal servants out of? Is your real name Teddy Kennedy?

Posted by: Darleen at June 29, 2007 08:07 AM

All brown people aren't Muslims? Can it be? How have I not heard this before?

My world is crumbling.

How much will your fence cost? How much, counselor, will your 12 million deportation hearings cost (or are we gonna have John Yoo weave his legal magic on this issue?)

Chris, I know, it's tragic to find this out, but there even white and black Muslims! They are less fun to bomb, however.

Darleen, by the way, I remember your disdain of "radical" Muslims in the context of your anger of the lady in the hajib suing the Detroit bus system. So, following the precepts of one's religion is radical?

Posted by: tb at June 29, 2007 09:43 AM

So, following the precepts of one's religion is radical?

Only if you're Christian, natch.

It might be nice if you can get facts right.

It wasn't a hajib, it was a niqab.

Accomodating the natural conflicts between public policy and private religion is a two-way street. I'd just as likely ridicule a religious nudist suing the Detriot bus system as I was this tented female.

Posted by: Darleen at June 29, 2007 11:41 AM

Except your problem was with attorney's fees, as I recall. And, like any good Israeli settler, you may know your hijab from your niqab, but it doesn't change your prejudices.

Nudism is illegal. The opposite is not. Yet, you favor discrimination in both cases. Seems telling.

Care to answer the fence question?

Posted by: tb at June 29, 2007 01:25 PM

What does legality have to do with whether something is open to criticism or not, tb? Are you not criticizing perfectly legal behavior?

I'd love to answer the fence question, but that fence hasn't been proposed, AFAIK.

Nudism is illegal. The opposite is not

Wrong, again. IIRC, the bus system had a policy against ANY mask that would obscure the face. The frivolous lawsuit (and I'm against the outrageous expense generated by frivolous lawsuits) was that the bus company make an exception...that the company's legitimate security policy be scrapped in favor of this female.

"My" fence? Is that like "my" military? "My" police?

The fence will, I believe, cost less than the $1 million a day AND it will have an ending point.

If not the fence, then we can return to a time when the border was patroled by the military (my grandfather was with the 11th Cavalry - real horses - between WWI and WWII patrolling the US/Mexican border).

"If not the fence, then we can return to a time when the border was patroled by the military "

Oh, for the days that General Pershing patroled our border!

db, I do corporate finance for a living but an occasional foray into public finance is often educational.

Why are you so concerned about the cost of the fence? Let's do a quick cost benefit analysis:

1) What is the cost to the U S Treasury and State and Local government of all illegal aliens in the U S? Include healthcare, education, law enforcement and admin/bureaucratic expense.
2) What is the total cost of building an effective barrier between Mexico and the U S?

I can't begin to fathom the cost of #1, but I suppose it could be determined fairly accurately.

I can estimate the cost of #2 because U S engineering firms have accomplished such large scale infrastructure projects historically. For example, the Interstate Highway System, TVA and others.

I think on a microscopic scale, Darleen can give you an idea of the law enforcement costs in just one county in one state. They are amazing.

tb, the fence is not the problem

Posted by: HughS at June 29, 2007 04:51 PM

On the contrary, white and black people are just as much fun to bomb. They're all red on the inside.

BTW, that was sarcasm, just like my last comment.
