Here is Ahmadinejad's full letter. Read the whole thing for yourself and realize this is the second time he is calling for us infidels to accept Islam and understand what our refusal to convert or submit will be.

What are you talking about? There's nothing in there about submission to Islam.

Not sure I follow the "Islam" argument. The cartoon you have featured provides no insight into the letter. The letter has the tone of an appeal, not a condemnation. He seems to be sidestepping Bush and addressing the people of America to stop supporting Israel and cease our war in Iraq.

The sincerity of his letter is another question but I don't agree with your characterization of the actual content. On the surface, its an appeal for peace.

Josh

This is what he is talking about:

'We should all heed the Divine Word of the Holy Qur'an:

"But those who repent, have faith and do good may receive Salvation. Your Lord, alone, creates and chooses as He will, and others have no part in His choice; Glorified is God and Exalted above any partners they ascribe to Him." (28:67-68)"

If you are not familiar with the vernacular of religous texts then study up quick. And read his letter to President Bush. He issues the same invitation and result for those who do not accept the invitation.

BTW Josh, this guy was one of the hostage takers during the invasion of the US embassy ( read: invasion of US territory ) in 1979.

I take him at his word and believe he is as dangerous as Hitler and Stalin.

To say this letter is an effort to convert Americans to Islam, is like saying:

A cup of tea with a wedge of lemon is lemonade.

Yes, he invokes God and quotes the Qur'an in two short paragraphs. But he also calls Americans : "Noble", "God-fearing", "truth-loving", and "justice-seeking". He writes 50 paragraphs developing an ethical argument that with a few edits could be described as Humanistic. Clearly this is a play to appeal to us in terms that are generally accepted as good, ethical behavior, regardless of religion.

I'm not saying he's sincere. But on the face of it this is not a threat. This is an lengthy appeal to our sense of fairness , bookended by Islamic verse.

I does not matter how many paragraphs he wrote to produce what you say is "an ethical argument".

Look at this letter and its author in the context of the whole.

1) The "bookend" is a call to salvation, the refusal to do which results in beheading.

2) The author personally kidnapped and tortured American citizens in their own embassy.

3) The author has threatened to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

4) The author denies the Holocaust.

He is not "making am lengthy appeal to our sense of fairness". He is using our sense of fairness to sell a lie.

Hugh,

Josh and John are different names.

You seem to be suffering from the mistaken impression that the issue here is whether Ahmadinejad is an evil and dangerous. Neither John nor I are debating this point. The only issue here is whether the text of this particular letter implores Americans to submit to Islam. The words of the letter stand on their own.

Josh
Sorry for the confusion on names.

BTW, do the words on this paper "stand on their own"?

My point is that I don't believe a word he says and that the scripture he quoted is in fact an invitation to convert; failure to accept the invitation results in death.

Nor do I. But that isn't the issue.

the scripture he quoted is in fact an invitation to convert;

Sadly, much scripture is.

failure to accept the invitation results in death.

Unfortunately, many ancient religious texts predict dire consequences for those who fail to adhere to the religion propunded therein. However, in this case I did a quick search of nearby verses the Koran but I didn't see anything to support that. It was a quick search though. Did you find something that I missed?
