Saving Mt. Soledad from anti-religious bigotry

Fantastic news

ANN ARBOR, MI – President Bush is scheduled to sign legislation on Monday, August 14, that would transfer ownership of the Mt. Soledad property to the federal government. The President has invited Charles LiMandri of the Thomas More Law Center to be present at the bill signing ceremony. LiMandri, the Law Center’s West Coast Director, has spearheaded the legal fight to protect the Mt. Soledad Cross and Memorial.

The legislation, which provides for the immediate transfer of ownership of the veterans memorial to the federal government, was first introduced in the House of Representatives by Duncan Hunter (R-CA). The legislation was overwhelmingly passed by the House 349-74 on July 19, 2006, and unanimously approved by the Senate on August 1.

I don't get it. Won't the cross being on Federal land give the opponents a *better* "church and state" argument that it should be torn down???

I would think selling the land to a private foundation would be the right move. I'm confused.

- Federal war memorials have been given a pass on the "church and state" thing by the SCOTUS. As long as the interred's religious wishes are respected. So we'll check all the religious beliefs of the memorial honoree's, and simply add a Cross of David, and a goat to cover everybody. Maybe even a Rune if one of the dead happened to be a Wicca.

It won't stop the ACLU from continuing their nuisance suit, but it bodes better for the memorial to survive because SCOTUS has been more practical where when it comes to historical, rather than contemporary, monuments that contain religious symbols.

In the 17 year history of the anti-religious bigot who has tried to destroy the monument, the land WAS sold to a private trust ... TWICE .. the second time being at open bid, but the asswipe judge shopped the state for at least one judge to invalidate the sale because it left the cross standing.

- It's not about "uplifting" the atheist maggot's beliefs that's kept this cannard going all these years. If that was all he wanted he could have taken all the money he's blown out of shere jealousy and hate of religion, and bought some land and erected an atheist memorial. it's about sour grapes, bigotry, and tearing down the sacred marks and memories of others, pure and simple. I hope he go's to his grave alone and bitter.
