Hudna in Gaza
Laurence Simon posting on Meryl Yourish's site
Militant Terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip have agreed to stop firing missiles at Israel at midnight Saturday, senior Palestinian officials said.As Laurence points out, not a word about Shalit. The unilateral cease-fire is aimed at ending an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip that began June 28, three days after militants raided an Israeli army post, killing two soldiers and capturing a third, 19-year-old Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the officials said on condition of anonymity because the agreement was reached at a closed meeting.
If you're not familiar with the tactical move of "hudna", it is a temporary truce or cease-fire in order to allow the declarants time to regroup, rearm and reattack at a time of their picking while the enemy, lured into a false sense of security, has lowered their guard. This was the tactic used by Muhammad to take over Mecca in 628. He made a ten-year "treaty" with the Kuraysh, but broke it two years later when he assessed his forces had regrouped enough to complete the conquest.
IMO, Israel should not accept anything on the Islamists' terms.
