Lessons unlearned from the Wellstone funeral political rally - UPDATED

Jhimmi Carter makes further huge withdrawals from his moral bank account with using Coretta Scott King's corpse to score political points

The funeral took on political overtones as former President Carter said of the Kings: "It was difficult for them then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretaps." Later, he said that Hurricane Katrina showed that all are not yet equal in America.

And both Bush and his father winced as they sat behind the pulpit and heard the Rev. Joseph Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr., take several jabs at foreign and domestic policies.

"We know there were no weapons of mass destruction over there, but Coretta knew and we knew there are weapons of misdirection right down here," Lowery said, complaining that were far too many in the U.S. are living in poverty and without health care insurance.

"For war, billions more, but no more for the poor," Lowery continued, a take-off of a lyric from the song "A Time to Love" which drew a roaring standing ovation.

Bush's father tried to defuse any political tension by joking that Lowery used to challenge him when he was president, too.

"I kept score in the Oval Office desk — Lowery 21, Bush 3," former President George H.W. Bush said. "It wasn't a fair fight."

I'll give Lowery the benefit of senility and its tendency to make people not only live in the past but to warp present reality to that past, but Jhimmi is disgusting.

UPDATE While some, like the Drew in my comments, squawks about "goosestepping" Republicans, the funeral political point scoring continues as a topic of discussion of the Left cult's personal is political here:

Yeah, I agree why would there be any talk about inequality and dishonesty at the funeral of a LIFELONG ACTIVIST? Especially from her lifelong friends! What nerve. If we want political funerals we'll take ten day Republican funerals in the middle of an election anyday.

The old Republican hypocrisy machine is in full faux outrage mode. Why do they seem so tired now, lackluster, bored, as if all this effort to gin up pretend outrage is getting too difficult?

Maybe all the lies and corruption and incompetence and inequality they're trying to pretend are not their fault has taken all the spirit out of them. But good to see they've still got goosestepping bloggers like yourself still willing to pump up the phony narrative. It's getting tougher, ain't it? Even Richard Mellon Scaife is coming out for Murtha now. Dark days ahead for the American Monarchy Party.

For comparison, maybe we can compare MLK's "politicization" of the funeral of 3 of the girls killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. From his eulogy:

They are the martyred heroines of a holy crusade for freedom and human dignity. And so this afternoon in a real sense they have something to say to each of us in their death. They have something to say to every minister of the gospel who has remained silent behind the safe security of stained-glass windows. They have something to say to every politician: who has fed his constituents with the stale bread of hatred and the spoiled meat of racism. They have something to say to a federal government that has compromised with the undemocratic practices of southern Dixiecrats and the blatant hypocrisy of right-wing northern Republicans.

Come on, let's see you trash Dr. King while you're at it. Bush politicized the funeral himself by showing up. The pubs have got to stop trying to have their cake and eat it too.

"goosestepping" ding

"American monarch party" ding

Sneering at President Reagan's funeral and complaining that GW even showed at CS King's funeral... ding ding

Hi, MommaMabel. See you've gone off your meds again.

Seems it was Bobby Kennedy who was illegally listening in on Dr. King. How ironic. At least the current c.o.c. is concentrating on AQ. How quaint.

Personally? I welcome the comparison of the class and dignity on display during the Reagan funeral and the whooping, hollering and general air of a political rally on display throughout the Wellstone "memorial" and during parts of CS King's service.

America is watching, "progressive" Democrats. And whether you want to acknoledge it or not, the image is not one that will appeal to the centrist voters you need to win national elections.

America isn't watching, you nitwits. More and more you wingnuts are alone in your political masturbation, snickering behind your hands like the strange little sycophants that you are.

She was a Civil Rights Activist. It was entirely in keeping with her legacy for them to discuss Civil Rights and Activism, as her husband did, as was done at her husband's funeral.

Stop playing nanny and knuckle smacking schoolmarm. Start questioning why your party has failed to govern, why it has so much to be ashamed of, why they must conceal their true nature from the American people. The squirming your failed president was doing in his chair yesterday, like a naughty boy with a load in his pants, is going to become very familiar.

African-Americans liked the speeches given at Mrs King's funeral service.

The far right did not, but then again Mrs King's funeral wasn't really put on to please them.

African-Americans tend to give funerals to please themselves, not right-wing ideologues.

No, you're wrong, Carl. Everything everyone does now has to pass muster with the far right nanny brigade. They are the keepers of our culture, our moral toll booth operators. It's because their reign in our government has been marked by such clean ethics, blazing honesty and openness, sterling competence and sparkling integrity. That's why even when there is a funeral for a leader who stood in opposition to everything they stand for, they are the ones whose feelings must come first, they are the ones who will tell the family who to invite and what their friends may say.

You see, Republicans NEVER play politics with important things. They never, for instance, would raise phony terror alerts to win elections or constantly fear monger a citizenry in order to keep their grimy, ham slimy fists on the reigns of power. No way. They're above all that. It's the FRIENDS of a great woman speaking truth to power who are playing politics. Not the actual power mad politicians destroying our democracy from within.

Amazing, you who do not mention Mrs. Kings death jump all over the "political" nature of her funeral.
Who's using who?
You accuse the Democrats for using the event for political gain and to bash the president, yet you are using the event to bash the democrats...how is this any better?

Hypocritical behavior

Carl, the majority of CS King's funeral was one of great eulogies. Even Uncle Teddy stayed sober and on point.

But as usual with the Left cultists, there is NEVER a time when people can have a moment which is not political. Mommy Sheehan pimps her son's corpse and the morally bankrupt Jhimmi uses Coretta's corpse while actually drawing comparing MLK to al Qaeda. This isn't at all about right/left but about something called PROPRIETY. Now, for the vast majority of Americans, especially not steeped in the personal is political Left cult dogma, a day of a wonderful tribute it has been ever marred. Jhimmi Wellstoned the Coretta Scott King funeral and that's all that will be remembered in the future. And the weirdness is compounded by the Left cult members...like "AB" (aka MamaMabel) and "A Friend" (aka Hrubec, Snick) above who can't write one sentence dealing with actual reality. Like Amanda, their personal narrow focused prism is jealously clenched and never out of reach.

Notice, too, that will Islamists running around the world blowing up buildings, murdering, rioting and issuing bounties and death threats over cartoons, for cultists like AFriend/Hrubec, it doesn't exist. Any talk about the fascism of Islamic theocracies and terrorists is "fear mongering".

Yeah, right.

Jesus, Darleen -
Is it like this here all the time?
How can you stand the liquid stupidity these lefty pudknockers are shooting out their asses?
I mean, for God's sake guys, I'm sure you know where there's a circle jerk happening at a nearby park or truckstop. Why not mince over and jerk away instead of stinking up the air around respectable people?
Fucking tools.

"Notice, too, that will Islamists running around the world blowing up buildings, murdering, rioting and issuing bounties and death threats over cartoons,"

Yes, yes, we get it, you trailer trash wingnut sycophant. Because religious freaks are rioting in Denmark, we need to burn our own constitution and let the wingnut nannies rap our knuckles and lecture us on how to behave at our own funerals. What incredible fucking pussies you little creeps are and where the hell are your brownshirt leaders taking our country.

Cry about National Security. Chew up and vomit back the RNC talking points about how Dems are "weak" on it...But ALWAYS, whatever you do, IGNORE the fact that your little papier mache neocon king has NOT protected our borders, NOT improved our emergency response, NOT hardened our chemical/nuclear targets here at home, NOT secured nuclear materials around the world....and that he HAS destabilized the middle east in the most egregious display of foreign policy miscalculation and incompetence in US history, that he HAS helped spread Islamic fundamentalism and anti American hatred and that he HAS gutted our military and destroyed our ability to respond to REAL threats that are increasing every day.

As long as they have sycophantic pussies like you all to vomit out their party line, they can continue to destroy us. I'm not one of those liberals who believes the best way to show toughness is to cower under the propaganda machine of the hard right.

And as for circle jerking, rickinstl, the line forms to the right here on darleen's blogroll - you got wingnut jism all over your hands just clicking on that shitload of garbage.
